Dear Editor,

As a resident concerned about the wellbeing of San Simon’s residents, over the ongoing water crisis in San Simon. In 2025, our town faced critical water shortages due to failing infrastructure and years of unregulated groundwater depletion. For too long, San Simon has been left behind in statewide water policy discussions—yet we are among the most vulnerable.

Earlier this year, the San Simon Water Improvement District reported water line breaks and leaks near the railroad tracks, underlining the fragility of our local infrastructure. This crisis is not isolated. Statewide, Arizona’s groundwater depletion has reached alarming levels, reportedly surpassing the entire volume of Lake Mead.

I commend our state legislators for introducing the Rural Groundwater Management Act of 2025, which finally gives rural communities a voice in how their groundwater is managed and while I hope this offers some relief to San Simon, I am still very concerned that our current Water Board members are not doing enough to ensure we are being recognized by the county to ensure we receive the support we need to prevent future deterioration of our current facilities.

We urge continued investment in rural water infrastructure, enforcement of conservation efforts, and equitable water policy that includes—not ignores—Arizona’s rural voices. Our community deserves access to clean, reliable water and a seat at the table in managing it.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the alarming frequency and severity of accidents along the stretch of Interstate 10 between San Simon and Bowie, Arizona. This corridor has witnessed multiple tragic incidents in 2025, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.

In September 2024, a devastating crash occurred near milepost 391 when a semi-truck suffered a tire failure, crossed the median, and collided with a westbound SUV. This tragic event resulted in the loss of three lives and left three others injured . More recently, in April 2025, a dust storm caused zero visibility conditions between Bowie and San Simon, leading to the closure of both directions of I-10 . Additionally, in May 2025, a mass casualty incident involving a semi-truck fire occurred at milepost 390, further highlighting the dangers present on this stretch of highway

These incidents are not isolated; they point to systemic issues that demand immediate attention. Factors such as inadequate infrastructure to handle severe weather conditions, insufficient warning systems for dust storms, and the high volume of heavy truck traffic contribute to the perilous nature of this roadway.
